Introductory Study Module Industrial Engineering
The focus is on a problem-based assignment that provides an initial insight into the interdisciplinary approach of industrial engineering and establishes connections to future teaching and learning content. Working in teams not only provides an opportunity for academic discussion but also fosters networking among students. The course facilitates an easy introduction to the department and fellow students and lays the foundation for shared learning and collaborative work during their studies and in their future professional careers.
In cooperation with companies and other institutions at TU Dortmund University, introductory events, workshops, and other interactive formats are organized to provide students with practical insights into current issues and fields of application. The thematic focus can be adapted and expanded from year to year to ensure a constant connection to current developments and challenges in the field of industrial engineering.
A joint closing event brings together the experiences gained and provides all participants with another opportunity for exchange. During this event, students present their findings, discuss them with experts and among themselves, and place them in a broader context. This creates a space for reflection, looking ahead, and exchanging ideas on further topics and questions.
After completing this module, students will be able to work in teams to analyze simple problems in their field of study, identify key challenges in the industrial engineering program or professional field, and place these challenges within the broader academic context by …
- developing an awareness of global challenges and sustainable business practices,
- they jointly examine and discuss the problem in the context of their degree program and identify key issues,
- they independently research initial concepts and methods for idea generation and sustainable design, or seek expert opinions and guidance from tutors and technical assistants,
- analyze the case study as a team using appropriate analytical tools and reflect on its relevance to their own degree program,
- develop sustainable and innovative solutions using creativity techniques,
- structure, prepare, and present the jointly developed solutions in a suitable format,
to solve technical problems in light of current challenges such as the zero-consumption economy.
The portfolio assessment accompanies this learning process throughout the entire semester. As part of this process, students produce several pieces of work (artifacts) during the course, which are created as part of assignments and serve to apply, deepen, and reflect on what they have learned. The portfolio is supplemented by a final oral or written exam administered by the department. The final grade is determined by the evaluation of all examination components. The specific structure of the portfolio assessment will be announced at the beginning of the semester in the respective course. The examination regulations are governed by the currently valid examination regulations.
