FAQ | Courses

A module with restricted participation is only open to a certain number of students. This is due to the special characteristics of a module, as sufficient supervision and teaching of content cannot be ensured if there are more participants. When participating in such a module, students are obliged to take part in the first possible examination date. The explicit conditions for each course can be found on the corresponding course page in our study area. You can find more information on this in your examination regulations.

Currently applies to our course(s): Corporate Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Master)

Flipped classroom describes a teaching concept in which knowledge is imparted through self-study using information provided and, building on this, the content is deepened, applied and discussed in the classroom (in-class) phase. This allows students to engage with the material regardless of time and place, and the joint discussion of content in class also increases learning success.

For modules with limited participation, the registration deadline ends after a transition period communicated by the course coordinators. Registration in the Moodle room after this deadline is binding and irrevocable. For modules with coursework, the end of the registration period for the coursework is decisive. Otherwise, the registration period of the examination applies.

The Moodle rooms for the respective courses will be activated by the start of each semester at the latest; separate deadlines apply for laboratories (see departmental information). The current link to the room can be found on the respective course pages.

If a registration key is required for one of our Moodle rooms, this can be found on the respective course page or will be communicated on the first course date. Please note for courses with a limited number of participants: the respective registration formalities can also be found on the course page.

We make every effort to make our events as accessible as possible. However, if there are any challenges or difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact the event organizers. We are open to any suggestions and will work with you to find a solution.

For the recognition of examinations taken abroad, please contact the International Coordination Office. You will find all the necessary information there. Please note: courses abroad are currently checked for recognition in advance. Please bear this in mind when planning your stay abroad and contact the International Affairs team in good time.

To take a Master's module as an enrolled Bachelor's student, please contact the Examinations Office. The necessary application will be initiated there and sent to us (or other chairs). In addition, please let the course supervisor know after you have received admission from the Examinations Office. (Link to the examination office)

Please note: courses with restricted attendance (e.g. specialist laboratories or our Master's course "Corporate Logistics and Supply Chain Management") and final theses cannot be brought forward.

FAQ | Exams

A portfolio assessment is a form of evaluation in which you submit several pieces of work (artifacts) related to the course content throughout the semester. These are created as part of assignments and serve to apply, deepen, and reflect on what you have learned. In our department, the portfolio is supplemented by a final oral or written exam. The final grade is determined by the evaluation of all components of the assessment. The exact structure of the portfolio assessment will be announced at the beginning of the semester in the respective course. The examination regulations can be found in the currently valid examination regulations (as cited in Gerick, J., Sommer, A., & Zimmermann, G. (Eds.). (2022). Designing Effective Exams: 60 Exam Formats for Higher Education. UTB).

For modules with limited enrollment, attendance at the first available exam date is mandatory, which automatically results in a module commitment. If you do not pass the exam on the first date, the module commitment remains in effect; you are then free to choose whether to take the exam on the second or third date.

If you have any problems registering for an exam or course in the Campus Portal or BOSS, please contact the Exam Administration Office.

Exams are largely planned and scheduled centrally by TU Dortmund University. The department of Mechanical Engineering publishes the exam schedules.

For the final room assignments and times, please check the course page or visit the course’s Moodle room.

FAQ | Academic Achievements

Yes, participation in the respective coursework is mandatory for each course, as it is a prerequisite for admission to the exam.

Please refer to the respective module descriptions in the module handbooks to determine whether a course requirement is necessary to take the exam.

This currently applies to our course(s): Fundamentals of Business Logistics and Supply Chain Management (Bachelor’s), Purchasing and Supply Management (Master’s), Factory Planning and Operations (Master’s), Maintenance and Service Management (Master’s)

To earn course credit for a course, you must register via the Campus Portal (for LOG, WING, and MB degree programs) or BOSS (for Statistics and Computer Science degree programs). In some cases, you may also need to sign up in the Moodle room to select a group or for similar purposes. Registration deadlines, course content, and other requirements will be announced by the course instructors.

No, it is not possible to make up the coursework. It is therefore important to attend the module's classes from the very beginning.

No. Coursework can only be completed if the lecture or seminar is actually held during that semester.

A course in which a student has earned credit remains valid for the duration of their studies and is usually recorded in BOSS. Formally, therefore, it is not necessary to retake a course in which a student has earned credit. In general, however, it is recommended that students study the course material in the following semester.

Often, failure to select a specialization prevents students from registering for courses or exams. If you encounter further problems with registering for courses or exams, please contact the Examinations Office.
